As we try to record our history in stories and statues, time overtakes them. And so, yesterday's truths become tomorrow's lies, societies struggle with their history and once-revered heroes are canceled while maligned figures are redeemed.

In the former ammunition storage of the historic fort, strange and distorted images of Martin Luther, Jesus and Mary, Queen Wilhelmina, Picasso and other historical figures emerge. They are sculptures of styrofoam and polyurethane by artist Folkert de Jong, in the theatrical exhibition “The hero, the villain and the truth – Cancel or redeem?”. The exhibition asks questions such as: What is history? Who writes this? What if it was written differently? By playing with truth, Folkert de Jong touches on themes such as morality, colonialism, capitalism, ecology and feminism. Through theatrical staging, lighting and audio stories, the sculptures are brought to life and open paths to alternative histories.

The artist's choice to use styrofoa and polyurethane, a non-degradable chemical material, raises ecological questions. What is the ethics of the material permanence of the images? What contradictions between creation and destruction do they reveal?

The exhibition marks the beginning of a longer collaboration between Folkert de Jong and Kunstfort Vijfhuizen. The artist will use the fort as a source of inspiration for new stories, strategies and materialities within his artistic practice.

The festive opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday, April 20 from 13.00:16.00 PM to XNUMX:XNUMX PM. Please come and have fun!
