Special donation marks the start of the new museum pavilion

On December 17, 2024, the Krijger family donated over 100 rare Roman coins to Elise van Melis, director of the Haarlemmermeermuseum De Cruquius. In this way, they introduced the (still empty) exhibition hall of the new Cruquius pavilion in a special way.

The coins are part of the largest Roman coin find in the Netherlands and were found in 1920 by farmer DJG Krijger while ploughing his land in Abbenes. In total, the find consisted of no less than 12.389 coins from the fourth century. This special treasure will be given a prominent place in the new exhibition, together with other archaeological finds from the time before the creation of the Haarlemmermeer.

The Cruquius pavilion, where stories about the pioneers of Haarlemmermeer are also told, will open in the spring of 2025. The De Cruquius pumping station will remain open and accessible during the renovation. The Haarlemmermeer Historical Museum at the Haarlemmermeerse Bos will be open until April 1, 2025.
