Tourism and leisure in Haarlemmermeer on the rise

July 15, 2025
Haarlemmermeer is increasingly being visited and appreciated as a day trip destination. This is evident from two recent studies: the national survey "Tourist Visits to Cities 2024" by the NBTC and the follow-up survey of the "Tourist Position of Haarlemmermeer 2025" study. The results offer promising prospects and concrete starting points for further development of the tourist and recreational offerings.

Hoofddorp popular with day trippers

In the national survey of 37 cities, Hoofddorp scored remarkably well! With over 2 million visits in 2024, the city ranks among popular Dutch cities like Zandvoort, Zoetermeer, and Deventer. Nearly half a million unique visitors came to Hoofddorp, many of them multiple times a year. This confirms Hoofddorp's growing importance as a regional attraction, with a strong appeal for shopping, dining, and culture.

Residents more positive about free time in their own region

The follow-up survey of Haarlemmermeer's Tourist Position also yielded positive feedback. Residents of the municipality and surrounding areas cite the Haarlemmermeer Forest, recreation, cycling, and shopping as strengths. Outdoor recreational opportunities, such as walking in the woods or cycling along the Ringvaart canal, are particularly appreciated. Satisfaction with the amenities has also increased, particularly among residents of surrounding municipalities such as Haarlem, Aalsmeer, and Amsterdam.

The recommendation intention, or the extent to which people would recommend Haarlemmermeer for a day trip, has increased. Residents of surrounding municipalities, in particular, have become more positive about spending their leisure time in Haarlemmermeer. This is partly due to the visibility of Visit Haarlemmermeer's campaigns, which, according to the study, have reached almost a quarter of residents.

Points of attention and opportunities

While the development is positive, there's still work to be done. Many residents indicate that the options outside of Hoofddorp are limited. There's a need for more inviting restaurants, cafes, unique shops, and cultural offerings. Young people and families, in particular, miss the variety and surprises in the existing offerings. Compared to neighboring cities like Haarlem and Amsterdam, Haarlemmermeer is sometimes still seen as "boring" or "undiscovered." There are clear opportunities here for entrepreneurs and policymakers: from strengthening local restaurants and cafes to developing events and cultural hotspots throughout the village centers!

Building an attractive Haarlemmermeer together

The growing appreciation for Haarlemmermeer as a leisure destination is good news for residents and businesses alike. The results of both studies confirm that investing in recreation and tourism pays off. Together, we can make Haarlemmermeer even more attractive! As a place to live, work, and relax.
