Haarlemmerliede: discover the Fort near Penningsveer

The beautiful village of Haarlemmerliede is located on the east side of the famous city of Haarlem. This picturesque town is formed by a ribbon development along the Liede, a river that used to connect the Haarlemmermeer with the Spaarne. Since 2019, the village has been part of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer and in 2021 it had 330 inhabitants.

In the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, every place of residence has its own iconic building by which you can recognize the place. You can recognize Haarlemmerliede by the Roman Catholic presbytery in neoclassical style. The St. Jacobus de Meer church was renovated in 1875 to replace the old presbytery. During the renovation, the shutters were removed and the dormer window was adjusted. Both the church and the garden are a municipal monument. 
 

Recreation and camping in Haarlemmerliede 

The beautiful surroundings of Haarlemmerliede are popular with day trippers who come to enjoy the peace and nature. There are several walking and cycling routes where you can explore the area. In the months of April and May, a walk along the river Liede is worthwhile. You can spot the spoonbill colony here, with fairytale white birds.

This is how you can go to Camping farm Blauhek Spaarnwoude and with campsite De Liede. This way you can optimally enjoy the farm landscape and the beautiful view over the water. 
 

Historic Fort in Haarlemmerliede 

At the Penningsveer you will find a historic fort. The Fort at Penningsveer in Haarlemmerliede is a provincial monument. There is also a wooden fortress house. The fort is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam and is the only one with two floors. Nowadays the Fort near Penningsveer is used as group accommodation for schools and institutions and for holding events. Fun fact: you can even rent the fort as a wedding venue!
