Spaarnwoude: medieval village near the green recreation area

Next to Haarlem and just below Spaarndam you will find the village of Spaarnwoude - not to be confused with the recreational area of ​​the same name Spaarnwoude, which is located above the village. The village of Spaarnwoude has only about 100 inhabitants (2021) but a lot of history.

It originated in the Middle Ages on a beach ridge that was formed about 5000 years ago. The only land connection from Haarlem to Amsterdam ran along Spaarnwoude. Medieval church tower of Spaarnwoude 

In the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, every place of residence has its own iconic building by which you can recognize the place. You can recognize Spaarnwoude by the church with a medieval tower. A restored church with a striking medieval tower, in the middle of Spaarnwoude. The tower dates from the early thirteenth century.  

The current church was built in 1764 and is called De Stompe Toren. Today you can find it here Stompe Toren Cultural Center.
