Walking in Spaarnwoude Park

There are endless activities to think of in Spaarnwoude Park, but walking is really number one. Before the construction of the area, the land was used by farmers for agriculture. In the 60s, landscape architect Jacoba Mulder turned this into an English landscape park with woods, grass and plenty of water. Ever since its construction, Spaarnwoude has been extremely popular among walkers and dog owners.

There are several hiking trails to follow. For example, there is the Buitenhuizen route (9 km) where you walk on a drained stretch of the IJ past monumental locks, windmills and a pumping station. The Lieveveld Route (11 km) is a circular walk from the old water village of Spaarndam through peat meadows and banks. The forts route (6,24 km) is also recommended. This interesting walking tour takes you along some of the unique defenses that are present in Haarlemmermeer.

Swimming in Spaarnwoude Park

During warm weather you can enjoy a swim in the Spaarnwoude Park recreation area. There are four lakes in the recreation area. For example, you can take a dip in the water in the Westbroekplas. This lake is surrounded by a 200 meter wide sandy beach, sunbathing areas and a walking path. In the middle the water is very deep, but from the beach it slopes gradually. Ideal for swimming laps.

The Veerplas is an artificial lake in the Veerpolder that is part of the Spaarnwoude recreation area. You will also find a large lawn and a sandy beach with a separate area for the kids. You also have the Peddelpoel, a nice swimming lake surrounded by lawns. It is often a bit quieter here during the summer crowds, if you are looking for a bit more relaxation.

Children can play to their heart's content on the water in the Adventure Playground Near Outdoor Center De Watergeus. Here you will find, among other things, a slide, two climbing towers, a ferry with cable and a rope bridge over the water.
