Cruquius: discover the unique history of Haarlemmermeer here

Between Heemstede and Hoofddorp lies the beautiful village of Cruquius on the Ringvaart. This small village has about 1000 inhabitants. When you hear the name Cruquius, the first thing you probably think of is the former Gemaal de Cruquius. The village of Cruquius is therefore named after the pumping station that was named in the mid-19th century after one of the early initiators of the reclamation of the Haarlemmermeer: ​​the hydraulic engineer Nicolaas Samuel Cruquius. This unique steam pumping station is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and now also has a museum. You will also find many nice shops in Cruquius and amazing restaurants.

De Cruquius pumping station 

In the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, every place of residence has its own iconic building by which you can recognize the place. You can recognize Cruquius by the steam pumping station. The Gemaal de Cruquius from 1849 is one of the three pumping stations with which Haarlemmermeer was pumped dry between 1849 and 1852.  

It is the largest steam engine in the world and is one of the top 100 Dutch national monuments. Today, Gemaal de Cruquius is an important industrial monument due to its special architecture and rich history. It is therefore one of the top 100 of the Dutch national monuments. This unique location has since been converted into a cultural hotspot with an innovative museum. Gemaal de Cruquius also offers meeting rooms and rooms for various events.  
 

Cruquis Museum 

The Cruquius Museum is part of Gemaal de Cruquius and tells the centuries-long history of the battle against the water. Are you curious about a preview? During a virtual tour the famous meteorologist Nicolaus Samuelis Cruquius and his housekeeper Johanna take you through the pumping station and the reclamation of the polder. Audio tours are also available in the museum and there is a fun treasure hunt for the kids.
