In Haarlemmermeer, each town is characterized by an iconic building. The village of Buitenkaag can be recognized by the ferry. This bicycle ferry takes you from the village of Kaag to Oud Ade. Ferry Veerpond Kaag is the only connection between Kaag and the surrounding area. 
 

Picturesque village on the Kagerplassen 

The picturesque village of Buitenkaag is the perfect location for a short stay. Tourists flock to Buitenkaag during the summer months. In this beautiful place you can admire the Kagerplassen lakes, sail around in a boat, or walk around in the surrounding nature. 

It is also worth visiting the church complex Saint Joannes Evangelist. Built in 1930, this church building is an example of the unique style of architecture of the Amsterdam School. There are also several restaurants in Buitenkaag, such as Brasserie Matt's and Bites & Boats, where you can enjoy a snack and drink with a view over the water. 
 

Leeghwater steam pumping station 

An iconic place in Buitenkaag is Gemaal de Leeghwater. This steam pumping station was used as a test steam pumping station for the reclamation of the Haarlemmermeer. After this, the pumping stations in Lijnden and Cruquius were also built, which together drained the Haarlemmermeer.
