Burgerveen: a small village with an iconic grain silo

Burgerveen is a small village located on the Ringvaart between Nieuw-Vennep and Aalsmeer. The village owes its name to a piece of peat land in the southeast corner of the Haarlemmermeer. Burgerveen has about 340 inhabitants (2021). It’s the birthplace of politician Hendrikus Colijn (1869-1944) who was Prime Minister of the Netherlands until 1939. Despite the fact that it’s only a small village, there is plenty to discover in Burgerveen: historic buildings, beautiful surroundings, and a cozy restaurant.

Grain silo converted to office space

In Haarlemmermeer, each town is characterized by an iconic building. You can recognize Burgerveen by the old grain silo. The grain silo on the Ringdijk has been converted into office space, with the original conveyor belt remaining. Because of its modern architecture, the iconic building stands out on the dike and is a beautiful example of cultural history preservation.

Water fun in Burgerveen

There is plenty to do in Burgerveen. During good weather you can hang out in and along the water, where you can sail, canoe, row and swim. A snack and drink are also available at Grand Café de Parel, located on the Leimuiderdijk in Leimuiderbrug, next to Burgerveen.

Burgerveen's local products

Family business Eveleens Palingrokerij is a very popular spot in Burgerveen. The best fresh eel from the region is smoked here every day, in a traditional way. Dirk Eveleens has been doing this for over 50 years now. He buys eel that is grown in clean water and keeps the fish in special containers hanging in the water of the Ringvaart. Dirk only used oak wood for smoking, which produces a delicious smoky taste.

Another hotspot in Burgerveen is Rozen en Radijs, a family business on the Aalsmeerderweg. Thousands of rose varieties have been grown here by the Vis family over generations. In addition to roses, the flower shop sells organic vegetables and delicious fruit from local farmers. It's even possible to celebrate your wedding here!

Curious about Burgerveen? Feel free to pay this beautiful village a visit. Enjoy the beautiful view on the water – and don't forget to try Dirk Eveleens' delicious eel!
