The Polder House

You will find the Polderhuis on the Market Square in Hoofddorp. This beautiful stately building was built in 1913. It was designed by the Dutch architect Foeke Kuipers in a classical architectural style, inspired by 17th-century Dutch classicism.

The Polderhuis was an important place in Hoofddorp. The board of the Haarlemmermeerpolder met here to discuss matters such as water management and flood defences. This happened earlier in Haarlem, because of its central location and good accessibility. But when Haarlemmermeer was also easily accessible in 1912 due to the construction of railway lines, it was time for a meeting place in the heart of the polder.

From 2005, the Polderhuis became the property of Rijnland. Today it is a protected monument and the building is rented to the municipality of Haarlemmermeer for social purposes.

The Old Town Hall

Near the Polderhuis you will find another protected monument: the Oude Raadhuis. This building is located on the Hoofdweg in Hoofddorp. The Raadhuis is located right next to the former Haarlemmermeer District Court and diagonally opposite the Polderhuis.

The Town Hall was built in 1867 in neoclassical style. Particularly striking are the white frames and the facade with a richly ornamented balcony. This also includes the municipal coat of arms of Haarlemmermeer. A lot has changed in the building over the years. For example, a number of outbuildings were placed to accommodate the growing number of civil servants because there was too little space.

This building has not been used as a town hall since 1980. But this special building has always played an important role in the administration and daily life of Haarlemmermeer due to its function. In terms of appearance, it is characteristic of the center of Hoofddorp. Nowadays you will find a theater and cinema in the Oude Raadhuis.

Market view

A little further on, on the other side of the Market Square, is another unique monument. The Marktcafé Marktzicht is located right next to the Polderhuis. This municipal monument has had a catering function in Hoofddorp for more than 150 years! It was built at the beginning of the polder, as one of the first buildings after the reclamation, around 1856.

It is a unique building with two striking gable roofs. After a major restoration, the facade has been fitted with new windows with more rods than the building originally had. On the side facade you can see the iconic six- and nine-pane windows.

A market café used to be located in this historic building. Marktzicht therefore plays a major role in the historical experience of the polder and is therefore a protected village view. The function of the building is still the same, only today you will find a cozy café here: Tasting room De Polderboom. A perfect place to enjoy a snack and a drink and admire the special heritage of Haarlemmermeer!
