El Theatro: Theatre in the polder

It seems a bit in the middle of nowhere: El Theatro. Hidden behind a white farmhouse on the Ringweg in Spaarndam is a special theatre. Elly Morren is the owner of this hobby theatre and came up with the idea. How did she start it? How long has the theatre been around? And what is on the agenda? If you are a theatre lover, read on!

Hobby theatre with an intimate atmosphere

Elly Morren worked for a few years with great pleasure behind the bar of the theatre in Velsen. She really liked the theatre world and wanted to do it as a hobby on a small scale. That dream came true when she moved to Spaarndam five years ago. The barn behind the house was a great location to convert into a theatre.

The barn was converted into a theatre, which Elly stylishly furnished. Her starting point was: even though it is a hobby theatre, the sound has to be good! The items for the interior come from all over and are very different. You will find high hanging tables with chairs, comfortable armchairs in which you can relax, different types of tables with chairs around them and a cool purple sofa from the Driehuis theatre. On the stage you see a grand piano. Against the wall a stately grandfather clock against the striking wallpaper. And an original bench from a confessional in the corner. On the wall hang cool colourful paintings, made by Emanuel, a painter from Madeira. At the back of the room, just before the bar you can play a game of pool. It is intimate and it breathes theatre.

Energy at El Theatro

The great thing is that the atmosphere is always different in El Theatro, because every artist brings their own energy. The performances differ, but are always super fun. The artists are increasingly finding their way to El Theatro. Just like the audience. Because at El Theatro you get to know a repertoire that you don't know yet in an accessible way. The program is varied: cabaret, bands from the area, French chansons, light classical, jazz and blues and country music. Do you like monologues? That's also possible! Like the monologue by Debbie Petter. And who knows, you might see Claudia de Breij on the stage of El Theatro again! That is a big wish of Elly Morren.

A mix

El Theatro does not focus on a specific target group. For Elly Morren, the afternoon is a success if the group of spectators is as mixed as possible. Young and old, theatre lovers and people who want to get a taste of theatre. Of course, you also see different audiences at the different performances. Are you looking for new theatre names and experiences? Then El Theatro is the right place for you! There are no performances for children (yet), but that is always possible. The tricky part here is that with parents and children in the audience, you quickly reach the maximum number of 50 people.

Visit this intimate theater

Are you curious about what there is to see? Sometimes they are try-outs but often regular performances. Because of the small-scale set-up, you still have the opportunity to talk to the artist at the bar afterwards. And are you a walker? That's great! Because in addition to the performances, Elly regularly organizes theater walks. The participants walk from performance to performance, especially in the various churches in the area.

Nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon? That's great! Then definitely visit this intimate theater. The focus for the performances is on Sunday afternoon, about three times a month. There is enough space to park next to the theater. But of course you can also come by bike.

Please note: the theatre is located on the first floor and is not wheelchair accessible.
