Start at De Olmenhorst
De Olmenhorst Estate is a green area of 31 hectares. It features apple and pear trees and old buildings. The estate has existed for more than 170 years. It is a quiet and green place to start the route. From here, you cycle towards the Ringvaart. This is a major waterway that surrounds Haarlemmermeer. The Ringvaart was dug by hand in 1845. This canal drained the area, creating the polder we know today.
Special places along the way
Along the way, you will pass beautiful and interesting places. For example, you will see the De Cruquius Pumping Station. This is an old steam pumping station that helped drain the Haarlemmermeer. It is now a museum where you can learn more about this history. You will also cycle along the Amsterdam Defence Line. This is an old defence line around Amsterdam. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will eat your main course in one of the forts. That makes it extra special.
Plane spotting
Because Schiphol is nearby, you sometimes see planes up close. The Polderbaan is a well-known spot to watch planes. You can stop here for a moment to watch landing and departing aircraft.
